Pregnancy week by week for dads and partners

Pregnancy week by week, for dads and partners: what her body is doing, how she may feel, and what you can do. Kind, practical and short.

I am her…

Why this guide

Pregnancy changes both of you. Many arguments start because one person does not know what the other is going through. This guide explains the body, respects the person, and gives one small, useful thing to do every day.

Every couple tool is started by the pregnant partner and works only with what each person chooses to share. Nothing tracks anyone. If you do not feel safe at home, see Need help?.

Get a reminder every week

Add the weekly reminders to your calendar once, and get a gentle note every week. The file is made on your phone: nothing is sent to us.

If something does not feel right

Listen, take it seriously, and help her call her midwife or maternity unit. If the baby is moving less than usual, call straight away, even at night. Learn the urgent warning signs now, before you need them.

Questions people ask

Should I go to the appointments and scans?

If she would like you there, yes, when you can. You can help ask questions and remember the answers. The NHS also suggests going to antenatal classes together (NHS).

Why is she so tired in early pregnancy?

Tiredness is very common, especially in the first 12 weeks, and later the extra weight can make her tired again (NHS). It is real, even when nothing shows yet.

When can I feel the baby kick?

She will usually start to feel the baby move between 16 and 24 weeks, and often after 20 weeks in a first pregnancy (NHS). Ask her to tell you when the kicks are strong, and put your hand on the bump.

What if the baby moves less than usual?

Call the midwife or maternity unit straight away, even in the middle of the night. Do not wait until the next day (NHS).

What should I do if she says something does not feel right?

Believe her and help her call her midwife or maternity unit. Read the urgent warning signs together now, so you both know them.

Is this only for husbands?

No. It is for any partner: husband, wife, girlfriend or boyfriend. Choose the word you use.

Where do the weekly facts come from?

From the NHS week-by-week guide and NHS symptom pages. Every pregnancy is different, so the cards say “may” and “often”.
