What leave rules usually include

The earliest start before the birth

Many countries let you start some weeks before the due date. In the UK, the earliest is usually 11 weeks before the expected week of childbirth (GOV.UK).

Weeks you must take after the birth

Some weeks are often compulsory. In the UK, you must take at least 2 weeks off after the birth, or 4 weeks if you work in a factory (GOV.UK).

Leave for the partner

Partners often have their own leave, or can share parental leave. The calculator shows both parents together, so you can plan as a team.

Paid or unpaid

Some leave is paid by the government, some by the employer, and some is unpaid. For example, US FMLA leave is unpaid but protects your job (U.S. Department of Labor).

Good to know

  • Rules change, and employers or collective agreements often give more. Always confirm with your employer and the official source.
  • Dates are based on the due date. Leave after the birth usually counts from the real birth date.
  • We only show rules we have checked on an official government source. If your country is “coming soon”, check your government’s website or ask your employer.
