How to prepare for a prenatal appointment

A little preparation helps you get more from each visit, and makes it easier to remember what was said.

Before

  • Write down your questions and any symptoms.
  • Check your timeline for tests that may be offered.
  • Plan who will come with you, if anyone.

What to bring

  • Your pregnancy notes.
  • A list of the medicines and supplements you take.
  • Your questions, on paper or in the appointment helper.
  • Something to drink and a snack, in case you wait.

During and after

  • Ask about anything you do not understand.
  • Note the date of the next appointment.
  • Share what was said with your partner, if you want.

Use the appointment helper to keep your questions and notes together.

Questions people ask

How long does the first appointment take?

In the UK, the first (booking) appointment can take around 1 hour (NHS). Later visits are usually shorter.

Which scans will I be offered in the UK?

Usually a dating scan at 11 to 14 weeks and a screening scan at 18 to 21 weeks (NHS). Ask your midwife about the scans where you live.

What should I bring to a prenatal appointment?

Your notes, a list of your medicines and supplements, and your questions. A drink and a snack help if you have to wait.

Can I bring my other children?

Many clinics allow it, but some do not, especially for scans. Ask your clinic before the day.

What if I forget to ask something?

Call your midwife or maternity team. You do not have to wait until your next appointment (NHS).
