Hospital bag checklist for mum, baby and partner

When to have your bag ready

At least 3 weeks before the due date. Only about 1 in 20 babies arrive on their due date, so it is good to be ready early.

Papers to bring

Your maternity notes and your birth plan. Put them on top of her bag. Ask your hospital if they need anything else, such as ID or insurance papers. Make a plan with the birth plan builder.

If you are having a caesarean

Use the same list, and add loose, high-waisted clothes and underwear that do not rub the wound. Ask your midwife what your hospital suggests.

Share the packing

Choose who packs each item. The birth partner can take whole jobs, like the baby’s bag and the car seat. Your ticks stay on this phone.

Tips

  • Keep the bags by the door from about 37 weeks.
  • Put the birth plan and notes on top.
  • Pack a long charger cable or a power bank.
  • Ask your hospital what they provide: lists differ.

Questions people ask

When should I pack my hospital bag?

The NHS suggests having it ready at least 3 weeks before your due date, because only about 1 in 20 babies arrive on the due date (NHS).

What does the baby need in the hospital bag?

Vests or bodysuits, sleepsuits, a going-home outfit, a hat, scratch mittens, socks, nappies, wipes or cotton wool, muslins, a blanket and a car seat (NHS).

How many baby outfits should I pack?

There is no fixed number. A few vests and sleepsuits, plus one going-home outfit, is a common choice. Ask your hospital how long you are likely to stay.

Which papers should I bring?

Your maternity notes and your birth plan (NHS), plus any ID or insurance papers your hospital asks for.

Do I need a car seat to go home?

If you go home by car, yes. The AAP says all babies should ride rear-facing, starting with the first ride home from the hospital (AAP).

Does the hospital give pads or nappies?

It depends on the hospital. Ask your maternity unit what they provide before you pack.

What should I pack for a caesarean?

The same list, plus loose, high-waisted clothes and underwear that do not rub the wound. Ask your midwife what your hospital suggests.
